7 Things Tourists Get Wrong About Dubrovnik (According to a Local)

If you work outdoors in Dubrovnik like I do, you hear a lot of things.
Some are great.
Some are funny.
Some are completely wrong.
So here it is — a completely honest, slightly cheeky list of things visitors often misunderstand about Dubrovnik… and what it’s actually like from a local perspective.
1. “Dubrovnik is just the Old Town.”
No.
The Old Town is beautiful — yes. But it’s only a tiny part of life here.
Maybe locals don’t live inside the walls anymore. But we hike above them. We cycle through the countryside. We swim on quiet beaches far from the main entrances.
If you only see Stradun, you’ve seen maybe 10% of Dubrovnik.
The real Dubrovnik is in the hills, on the islands, and on the trails.

2. “It’s always warm and sunny.”
We are on the Adriatic, yes. But we also have Jugo. And Bura. And days when the sea looks angry and the sky feels heavy.
Dubrovnik weather has personality. Especially in winter and early spring.
And when someone says “ Ma… južina”, that explains everything.
3. “It must be amazing to live here all the time.”
It is. But not in the way you think.
Summer is intense. Cruise ships. Heat. Crowds. Noise. Work from morning until night.
Locals actually enjoy Dubrovnik the most in:
late autumn
winter
early spring
When the city breathes again.
4. “Game of Thrones made Dubrovnik famous.”
Yes… and no.
We were proud to see the city on screen. But Dubrovnik was powerful, wealthy, and independent centuries before television existed.
The Republic of Dubrovnik traded across the Mediterranean when many European countries were still figuring themselves out.
We don’t mind the dragons.
But our history is much bigger than that.
5. “There’s not much to do besides sightseeing.”
This one always surprises me.
Dubrovnik is one of the best places in Croatia for:
hiking with sea views
coastal cycling
sea kayaking
paddleboarding
island hopping
Most visitors just don’t look beyond the walls.
That’s usually when they find DU Outdoors.
6. “Locals must hate tourists.”
No.
Tourism feeds the city. It gives jobs, energy, and opportunity. Most locals understand that.
What we don’t like is disrespect — littering, shouting at 2am, treating the city like a movie set instead of someone’s home.
If you respect Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik will love you back.
7. “You’re so lucky to live here.”
This one is true.
We complain about the weather. About traffic. About summer chaos.
But when you finish a hike above the Adriatic at sunset, or paddle in silence early in the morning… you remember.
Yes. We are lucky.
And we know it.

The Dubrovnik Most Visitors Miss
If you really want to understand Dubrovnik, don’t just photograph it.
Walk outside the walls.
Climb the hills.
Talk to locals.
Ask about the lifestyle.
Dubrovnik isn’t just a destination. It’s a rhythm.
And once you feel it, you’re no longer just a tourist.
You’re part of the story.
