A Day in My Life as an Outdoor Guide in Dubrovnik

People often ask me:

“So what’s it really like to live in Dubrovnik and work outdoors every day?”

Most people imagine I just paddle in the sun, cycle by the sea, and call it a day.

The truth? It’s a little more structured than that.

And it definitely involves more planning — and more gym sessions — than people expect.

6:30 AM — Before Coffee, There’s Weather

The first thing I check every morning isn’t my phone messages.

It’s the weather.

  • Wind direction (jugo or bura?)

  • Sea conditions

  • Temperature

  • Humidity

In Dubrovnik, wind decides everything. Especially when you run cycling, hiking, and paddleboard tours.

If the sea is calm, great — it’s a good day for paddleboarding along the coast.

If the wind is stronger, we shift to land — hiking above Dubrovnik or cycling through Konavle.

Being a local guide isn’t about forcing a plan. It’s about adapting to nature.

Only after that do I make coffee.

8:00 AM — Meeting Guests

Most mornings begin by meeting guests near the Old Town or at our starting point.

Some are here for two days.

Some are on their honeymoon.

Some just escaped cruise ship crowds and want to see “real Dubrovnik.”

That’s always the best moment — when they realise we’re not staying inside the city walls.

We’re going beyond them.

Late Morning — Land or Sea

A lot of people think Dubrovnik outdoor tours are all about the sea.

And yes — paddleboarding on a calm Adriatic morning is hard to beat.

But honestly? I spend just as much time on land.

Some days we’re:

  • Hiking panoramic trails above Dubrovnik

  • Exploring hidden viewpoints locals love

  • Cycling through villages and olive groves

  • Riding quiet countryside roads far from traffic

Those land tours often surprise guests the most. They expect coastline. They don’t expect green hills, silence, and endless views.

That’s when Dubrovnik becomes more than a postcard.

Early Afternoon — The Work You Don’t See

After tours, the visible part of the job ends.

The invisible part starts.

  • Cleaning and checking equipment

  • Planning routes based on seasonal conditions

  • Answering emails about the best time to visit Dubrovnik

  • Adjusting bookings

  • Watching weather forecasts again

Running DU Outdoors is not just about being active. It’s logistics, safety, responsibility.

Especially in high season.

Gym Time — Yes, Even After All That

Here’s something people don’t expect:

Even though I spend most of my day outdoors and active, I still go to the gym.

Not every day. But regularly.

Why?

Because guiding is repetitive movement. Cycling, hiking, paddling — it’s active, but it’s not always balanced training.

The gym clears my head.

It keeps my body strong.

It prevents injuries during long summer months.

And honestly — it’s quiet time. No questions, no planning. Just movement.

Even when you live outdoors, you still need structure.

Evening — A Different Dubrovnik

By evening, the city changes again.

Cruise ships leave.

The light softens.

The heat drops.

Sometimes I’ll take a short ride just for myself. No schedule. No guests. Just to reset.

Living in Dubrovnik isn’t about being on holiday every day.

It’s about rhythm.

Wind.

Season.

Balance.

And after years of guiding outdoor tours in Dubrovnik, I’ve learned something important:

You don’t control nature here.

You move with it.
