The Day Dubrovnik Woke Up Again

Today felt different.
This morning I took the short boat ride to Lokrum Island, something I like to do when the city is quiet and the season hasn’t fully started yet. Mid-March in Dubrovnik can still feel like winter some days. But today… today was one of those days that reminds you the season is changing.
And you could feel it everywhere.
Sunlight, Green Paths, and Families on Lokrum
Walking through the green paths of Lokrum, everything felt alive again. The island was peaceful as always, but it wasn’t empty. Quite the opposite.
There were local families everywhere.
Parents walking slowly with coffee in their hands. Kids running along the forest paths. People sitting on rocks near the sea, enjoying the sun like it was the first real warm day of the year.
It wasn’t crowded. It wasn’t busy.
It was just Dubrovnik locals doing what we all wait for during winter — stepping back outside.
The air smelled fresh, the sea was calm, and the sunlight had that soft spring warmth that you only get after months of grey skies and southern winds.
For someone who spends most of his days outdoors running hiking, cycling, and paddleboard tours in Dubrovnik, moments like this always stand out. Because you know the season is about to begin again.

From Lokrum to the Old Town
After Lokrum, I took the boat back and walked into the Old Town.
And that’s when the second sign appeared.
Walking down Stradun, I saw the first real groups of visitors sitting outside cafés, enjoying the sun. A few people were already eating their first gelatos of the year, sitting on the steps and watching the world go by.
It’s a small thing.
But in Dubrovnik, the first ice creams on Stradun are like a signal.
Winter is over.
The city is waking up again.

A Feeling That’s Hard to Explain
It’s hard to explain that feeling unless you live here.
After months of quiet streets, rain, jugo winds, and slower days, suddenly the light changes, people come outside again, and the energy returns to the city.
If I had to compare it to something universal, it’s a bit like the feeling when you open your windows on the first warm day after a long winter.
Fresh air comes in.
The house feels alive again.
You suddenly have energy to do things you didn’t feel like doing yesterday.
That’s what Dubrovnik felt like today.
The Season Slowly Begins
For those of us who work outdoors — whether it’s cycling tours around Dubrovnik, hiking above the Adriatic, or paddleboarding along the coast — this moment is always special.
It’s the quiet beginning before the season truly arrives.
Trails are green.
The air is fresh.
The city is still calm.
And if you’re lucky enough to visit Dubrovnik in early spring, you get to experience something many people miss — the moment when the city wakes up.
Today was one of those days.
And walking from the green paths of Lokrum to the sunlit stones of Stradun, I realised something simple:
Another Dubrovnik winter is officially behind us.
See you outdoors,
Teo
